Unknown Origins (2020) reviews and overview of Spanish murder mystery

Unknown Origins is a Spanish murder mystery superhero hybrid feature film about a killer using comic book stories as a basis for murder. Original title: Orígenes secretos

Directed by David Galán Galindo from a screenplay co-written with Fernando Navarro, based on the novel by Galindo, the movie stars Javier Rey, Verónica Echegui, Brays Efe and Antonio Resines.

Reviews [click links to read more]:

“The film is a little uneven, sometimes cheesy heroic catchphrases, sometimes gritty police procedural, sometimes real horror and gore, other times goofy costumes. And yet it’s obvious that director David Galán Galindo is not only offering a send up to the superhero genre, he’s inspired by it, influenced by it, and given it a more real-world setting than others have been able to.” Assholes Watching Movies

“It’s a rather simple enjoyable film, with great humor and action, some pretty gruesome gory dead bodies, a crazy villain, a well-crafted and executed storyline with three characters who in time steal your heart, some faster than others. With great balance between action, humor and drama it manages to create a new origin story of superheroes.” Big Horror Guide

Unknown Origins is one of the finer examples of breathing new life into an aging formula. It’s one that takes the best elements from a variety of different genres and blends them together to create a new superhero worth following. If there’s one Netflix Original you watch tonight – make sure it’s this one.” Entertaining Movies

” …mildly entertaining, even if each part doesn’t particularly work: the comedy isn’t funny, the thriller is not particularly thrilling or interesting, the origin story is (admittedly, on purpose) very cliched.” Fifth About the Seventh

“There’s gore, suspense, superhero references, and some colorful characters, including a police chief with a penchant for cosplay, and a mortician who seems just a bit too happy with his profession. Anyone expecting a nuanced look into what turns fans into obsessives, or what separates law enforcement from vigilantes will be disappointed.” Ready Steady Cut!

“While I appreciate Marvel’s cinematic universe has done a lot to dispel the old attitudes toward this, it’s still great to see another genre tackle this head-on. That’s to say nothing of the characters at the heart of this one, who all do a great job with their performances. And that’s partly why this film works as well as it does.” The Review Geek

“Sometimes I feel the film did take it’s comic book links a little far.  The ending, in particular, was definitely too far fetched and made the whole film seem a little silly, but sometimes we can all do with a little bit of silly. Highly recommend for comic book/pop culture fans, not so much for anyone else.” Trailer Trashed
